11 ส ถาบันพระพุทธศาสนาได้มีบทบาท อันส�ำคัญยิ่งต่อสังคมไทยมานานนับ พันปีเพราะวัดเป็นสถานที่ท�ำบุญใน โอกาสต่างๆ ที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับวิถีของชาวบ้าน เป็นศูนย์รวมจิตใจที่ส�ำคัญของคนไทยตั้งแต่อดีต จนถึงปัจจุบัน แม้ว่าบทบาทของวัด และพระสงฆ์ จะลดลงไปจากเดิม แต่กระนั้น วัดและพระสงฆ์ก็ ยังมีการปรับเปลี่ยนบทบาทให้สอดคล้องกับสภาพ สังคม โดยบทบาทหลักของวัดก็ยังคงเป็นสถานที่ พ�ำนักของพระสงฆ์สามเณร เป็นสถานที่ศึกษา เล่าเรียน ประพฤติปฏิบัติธรรม สืบทอดและเผยแผ่ หลักธรรมค�ำสั่งสอน และยังมีฐานะเป็นสถานที่ ประดิษฐานและรวบรวมของทางศิลปวัฒนธรรม ทั้งที่เป็นโบราณสถาน โบราณวัตถุ และศิลปวัตถุ ตลอดถึงการเป็นศูนย์กลางในการประกอบพิธีทาง ประเพณีวัฒนธรรมของชุมชน วัดจึงเป็นแหล่งรวมของศิลปกรรมอันล�้ำค่า ด้านสถาปัตยกรรมจิตรกรรม ที่ศิลปินได้ถ่ายทอด ลักษณะเด่นของค�ำสอนทางศาสนาออกมาในงาน ศิลปอย่างกลมกลืนน่าชื่นชมเป็นพุทธศิลป์ที่ให้ คุณค่าทั้งด้านความงามและคุณค่า เน้นสื่อให้คนเข้า ถึง พุทธศิลป์ที่ปรากฏในวัดจึงเป็นศิลปะแห่ง อุดมคติที่ให้คุณค่าและความหมายเชิงจริยธรรม อย่างสูง ด้วยความเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมอัน ล�้ำค่าเช่นนี้ วัดจึงเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวที่ส�ำคัญมา B uddhism has been an important part of Thai society for a long time. Buddhist temples are used as community centers where people come to make merit and socialize. Although, nowadays, fewer people go to temples but they still hold timeless value in Thai culture and society. For examples, temples provide educational purposes for young monks and Buddhist people. They contain valuable Buddhist artifacts and arts as well as unique architectures. Moreover, they are used as cultural centers where local people can hold ceremonies and visitors may enjoy learning the culture of Thai Buddhist. Temples are cultural heritages that keep Thai value through arts and paintings. Painters and sculptors express their desire through their beautiful Buddhist arts in order to make people understand more about Thai Buddhist culture and to present that the Buddhist arts represent high moral values.
