“ปากเกร็ด” นั้นมีประวัติศาสตร์ความเป็นมายาวนาน กว่า 350 ปี ตั้งแต่ครั้งกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นราชธานี สืบต่อมาจนถึง ปัจจุบัน มีข้อสันนิษฐานว่า “ปากเกร็ด” เป็นค�ำประสมจากค�ำว่า “ปาก” คงจะเนื่องมาจากชื่อ “วัดปากอ่าว” และค�ำว่า “เกร็ด” ซึ่งมีความหมายตามพจนานุกรม ฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ. 2493 ว่า “ห้วงน�้ำแคบต่อจากห้วงน�้ำใหญ่ทั้งสอง” ดังนั้น ค�ำว่า “ปากเกร็ด” จึงน่าจะหมายถึง “บริเวณผืนแผ่นดินที่เป็น ปากอ่าว มีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับแม่น�้ำใหญ่ จากหลักฐานและ ต�ำนานทางประวัติศาสตร์สันนิษฐานได้ว่า ในปี พ.ศ. 2265 รัชสมัยพระเจ้าอยู่หัวท้ายสระ อาจมีการขุดคลองเพื่อลัดแม่น�้ำ เจ้าพระยา ช่วงที่เริ่มไหลวกเข้าไปในคุ้งบางบัวทอง โดยในอดีต ผู้คนจะเรียกคลองนี้ว่า “คลองเตร็ดน้อย” และต่อมาเรียกว่า “คลองลัดเกร็ด” หรือเรียกว่า “แม่น�้ำลัดเกร็ด” ซึ่งท�ำให้เกิด เกาะเกร็ดขึ้นนั่นเอง ส่วนบริเวณต้นคลองลัดนั้นก็เรียกว่า “ปากเกร็ด” “Pakkret” has more than 350 years of history since Krungsri Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Thailand, until the present. There is a presumption that “Pakkret” is a compound word from the word “Pak” derived from “Wat Pak Aou” and the word “Kret” which according to the Royal Institute Dictionary B.E. 2493 means “Narrow river flourishing from a larger river”. Therefore, “Pakkret” should mean “land area on the river mouth” continuing from a large river. From historical evidence, it is assumed that in B.E.2265 in the reign of King Huatai Srat, there may have been the digging of a canal through the Chao Phraya River, spilling into Bang Bua Tong. In the past people called this canal “Klong Tret Noi” and later as “Klong Lud Kret”, or “Lud Kret River”, which created Koh Kret (Kret Island).
