The old market along waterside, where people of different races e.g. Thai, Chinese or Mon gathered for buying and selling Pak Kret District situated in the north of Nonthaburi province). The bridge is an extension of an overpass across Pak Kret Intersection on Jangwattana Road. The bridge runs across the river in the northern part of Koh Kret connecting with Chaiyapruek Road on the west side of the river before ending at Ratchapruek Road. The bridge was constructed with a purpose to facilitate transportation. The construction began in December 2003 with an architectural style of the fourth reign period and was therefore given name “Sapan Phraram See” (Raman IV) by King Bhumipol in honor of Phrabat Somdej Phra Jom Klao Chao Yoo Hua (King Rama IV). The bridge was officially opened for public use on December 8, 2006. On August 21, 2008, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Srirasm, Royal Consort to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, represented His Majesty the King in presiding over the opening ceremony. Talad Num Pak Kret: it was established in B.E. 2417 in front of Wat Sanam Nue during the time that Wat Pak Ao (or Wat Poramai Yikawat) was renovated as ordered by King Rama V. At that time, the king often made a visit to Wat Pak Ao. There were courtiers, populaces and builders at the temple. A community gathering was linked with a demand for goods, commodity and exchange. Started with a small group of merchants selling goods near the temple, the market later kept expanding so quickly that it was recorded in the letter of Phra Krungsriburirak (Nonthaburi commissioner) which was submitted to Phraya Yommaraj (the minister of Ministry of Interior) in B.E. 2458. In the letter, Phra Krungsriburirak mentioned that there were a lot of rowing boats lining up from Wat Sanam Chai to Wat Bo. A central market of the city was in connection with sub-markets and street vendors in the areas of Patum Thani, Bang Bua Thong, Baan Lam Yai and Baan Mai Talad Nue. However, like many floating markets, now everything has changed; land transportation becomes a predominant alternative. There are streets and bridges linking the main land with islets. Most boathouses and floating markets have been relocated to the land area. The old market along waterside, where people of different races e.g. Thai, Chinese or Mon gathered for buying and selling, has been preserved and renovated from time to time by Pak Kret City Municipality to be one of the major tourist attractions. Behind the market, there is a pier to accommodate water transportation services to Koh Kret. Flowing over the land of Pak Kret, the Chao Phraya River offers an embrace of warmness, abundance and prosperity which nurture and support the life of people. Pak Kret has asserted its identity as a legacy that surpasses time and trend. From floating to land markets In the past, the Chao Phraya River and many canals were a major route of Pak Kret transportation. On both sides along the watercourse were a continuous line of gardens and houses; thus, the existence of floating markets served the demand of local people and merchants as well as generated income for their living. At that time, there were 3 major floating markets. Talad Num Bang Talat: a big well-known floating market where a number of rowing boats stooped by for purchasing and selling a variety of items including food, vegetable and fruit. The market usually finished in the late morning. History entailed that people had to evacuate from those areas in B.E. 2502 when the land was expropriated from the villages around Baan Bang Talat, Baan Ta Sei, Wat Nah Bot and Wat Chueng Ta. Talad Num Bang Talat has disappeared since then. Talad Ongang Baan Koh Kret: Koh Kret is a prominent pottery market located on the islet. Trading and shipping have to depend on water transport. Thus, in the past, there were lots of boats waiting for transferring goods, pottery, stoves and pots as well as firewood. As time passes, the old traditional way of life however has vanished »Ò¡à¡Ãç´ ¹¤ÃáË‹§ªÕÇÔμ The City Of Happiness 44
