W ater source has a great deal of influence on early settlement. Water is required for consumption, agriculture, transportation and trade. Local traditions and culture rely on the presence of water. Therefore, the Chao Phraya River and canals have been a river of life which people in Pak Kret are dependent upon. The Land of Affluence Pak Kret District is located in the northeast of Nonthaburi province and 7.45 kilometers north of the province. Pak Kret covers areas on both sides of the Chao Phraya River. In the east of the district, Pak Kret City Municipality is situated covering 36.04 square kilometers, and rules 5 subdistricts (Tambon), namely Pak Kret, Bang Pood, Bang Talat, Khlong Kluea and Baan Mai which are further subdivided into 34 villages. It borders Muang District, Pathum Thani province on the north, Nonthaburi City Municipality on the south, Laksi District, Bangkok on the east and the Chao Phraya River close to Tambon Bang Tanai, Pak Kret District on the west. In addition to the fact that the Chao Phraya River flows across Pak Kret, the area contains a number of small canals that result in its fertility and nourish people of different races, i.e. Thai, Mon, Chinese and Lao, who migrated here presumably 350 years ago. Besides, the canals allow for surface water drainage to divert flood water from populated area to the Chao Phraya River. The main canals include Khlong Baan Mai, Khlong Baan Kao, Khlong Thong Lang, Khlong Wae, Khlong Wat Chong Lom, Khlong Klang Kret, Khlong Bang Pung, Khlong Bang Pood, Khlong Bang Talat and Khlong Bang Talat Noi. Additionally, there are other 7 sub-canals flowing in a north- south direction for water drainage into the main. These sub-canals are Khlong Kluea draining water into Khlong Bang Pood, Khlong Po draining water into Khlong Bang Pung, and Khlong Suay, Khlong Nong Ta Gen, Khlong Dong Tan, Khlong Hau Sing and Khlong Kee Lek draining water into Khlong Bang Talat. The soil found in Pak Kret is comparable in its fertility to that presented in Nonthaburi. Soil ingredients consist of silt and clay with minerals and can be categorized based on geological criteria into groups including Bangkok Soil, Bangken Soil, Thonburi Soil, Sena Soil, and Ongkarak Soil. Rich soil quality is an essential factor that supports land fertility, agricultural activities and livestock raising. Owing to its geographical proximity to Bangkok and convenience in transportation, the land which was formerly utilized for agricultural purpose however has been transformed to accommodate the rise in population, business, commerce, infrastructure and investment (especially in real estate). »Ò¡à¡Ãç´ ¹¤ÃáË‹§ªÕÇÔμ The City Of Happiness 38
